Satnavari 2.0: India’s First AI-Powered Smart Village Lights the Way for Rural Transformation

Nagpur: In a historic move towards rural digitization, Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on Monday inaugurated Satnavari — just 35 km from Nagpur — as India’s first-ever Artificial Intelligence (AI) driven Smart Village. With this, Satnavari has become a shining example of how cutting-edge technology can revolutionize agriculture, healthcare, education, and daily life in rural India.

The ambitious pilot project, designed by Voice of Indian Communication Technology Enterprises (Voice) in partnership with the district administration, is set to become a model for the entire state. Fadnavis announced a bold first-phase target: 10 smart villages in every taluka of Maharashtra.

🚀 What Makes Satnavari Smart?

Satnavari is now fully connected with Wi-Fi and fiber-optic internet, powered by a brand-new tower. This backbone of connectivity supports a suite of AI-driven apps, IoT devices, and community tools:

  • 🌱 Smart Farming Tools: Farmers now receive instant insights into soil health, fertilizer use, irrigation needs, and weather forecasts. They can remotely control solar-powered drip irrigation pumps via smartphone.
  • 🚁 Drone Assistance: A shared community drone sprays fertilizers, monitors crops, and can even help in firefighting emergencies.
  • 🏥 Smart Healthcare: Village health centres are connected to city hospitals for remote diagnostics and report sharing, reducing the need for patients to travel to Nagpur.
  • 🎓 Digital Classrooms: Students will now access quality educational content from top schools, including Nita Ambani’s institution, delivered through digital platforms.
  • 🐄 Bovine Health App: A unique app monitors the health of cattle and alerts farmers if abnormalities are detected.
  • 🔐 Smart Security & Energy: CCTV cameras ensure safety, while AI-powered lighting systems save energy by switching off when not in use.

🗣️ Leaders Speak

Fadnavis highlighted the transformative impact:

“This is just the beginning. Technology will empower farmers, improve healthcare, and bring world-class education right to our villages. Satnavari will be the template for India’s smart rural future.”

R.K. Bhatnagar, head of Voice, praised the government’s quick action:

“From our first meeting in June to execution in August, we achieved this transformation in record time. Alongside technology, we trained villagers to make full use of these tools.”

🌍 Beyond Satnavari: The Road Ahead

With 25 Indian companies funding the project and the government’s commitment to long-term sustainability, Satnavari is just the start. Plans are underway to replicate the model in every taluka, potentially reshaping the future of over 40,000 villages in Maharashtra.

Satnavari’s transformation is proof that AI, IoT, and digital innovation are not just for cities — they are the future of rural India.

Satnavari 2.0 isn’t just a village — it’s the dawn of a new rural revolution.
